The Kodansha web site has updated with a new image of the heroine of Ojamajo Doremi (1999), looking older and in the current style of her designer, Umakoshi Yoshihiko. According to the main page, this year will see a new addition to the Ojamajo Doremi franchise, a light novel titled Ojamajo Doremi 16. Voice actress Chiemi Chiba has posted on Twitter that the book will be released in December, and describes it as a story about the Ojamajo Doremi characters’ high school years. The book is being written by Izumi Todo and Midori Kuriyama, who both wrote for Ojamajo Doremi and HeartCatch PreCure. Speculation is flying that this light novel will be followed by an all-new Doremi TV series. Keep your fingers crossed, everyone!!
The stage is very well-set for a Doremi revival: HeartCatch PreCure (which shares much of the same staff, including Umakoshi, Todo and Kuriyama) has resonated very well with young audiences. Toei (who produced both magical girl series) may be looking to cash in on the connection. Umakoshi recently released an artbook (“Umakoshi Yoshihiko TOEI Animation Works”) featuring art from both Doremi and HeartCatch.
Here’s hoping for a smooth revival for this turn-of-the-millennium series!
